Jan is a trial attorney representing companies and individuals in major litigation and regulatory actions.

In a time when many attorneys have little or no trial experience, Jan bucks the trend. Jan first-chaired numerous trials during his 17 years with the U.S. Attorney’s Office. Since joining Thompson Coburn in 2005, he maintains a very active docket, achieving favorable judgments for clients in trial after trial.

Jan is part of the firm’s Business Litigation group and serves as chair of the White Collar Defense and Investigations practice. As a business litigator, he represents corporate and individual clients in a wide range of areas, including disputes involving international licensing agreements, major construction litigation, contract disputes and civil RICO litigation. He also works extensively with the firm’s Health Care practice group and represents health care entities before the U.S. Department of Justice and the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, successfully negotiating favorable and timely outcomes for clients.

Jan’s extensive experience in white-collar crime cases includes fraud allegations in the health care, government contracts, mortgages, investments, bankruptcy, tax, and banking and regulatory fields. He conducts internal investigations in areas ranging from potential employee misconduct to Sarbanes-Oxley matters. Jan has extensive appellate litigation experience, authoring dozens of appellate briefs and arguing in federal appellate court countless times.

In his former position as United States Attorney for the Central District of Illinois, Jan led a team of 29 Assistant U.S. Attorneys, coordinating the law enforcement efforts of local, state, and federal agencies throughout the district’s 46 counties. Previously, he was an Assistant U.S. Attorney for the District of Maryland, where he prosecuted major criminal cases and represented the United States in civil actions.

Jan’s work as a prosecutor was commended by numerous investigative agencies, and he received awards from the U.S. Department of Justice and the International Association of Financial Crimes Investigators. As Appellate Chief for the Southern Division of the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Maryland, Jan was responsible for reviewing all submissions to the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit.

In my free time, I enjoy traveling with my wife, good cigars, and trying all sorts of international food. I have also been known to perform concerts in small venues in St. Louis, singing songs from the Rat Pack era — in particular, those recorded by the incomparable Frank Sinatra.
